OVERVIEW OF NEPAD NIGERIA

The New Partnership for Africa’s Development (NEPAD) is a comprehensive integrated sustainable development initiative for the economic and social revival of Africa. It is a
pledge by African leaders, based on a common vision and shared conviction that they have a pressing duty to the African people to eradicate poverty and to place their countries, both individually and collectively, on the path of sustainable growth and development, at the same time, to participate actively in the world economy and body politic.
NEPAD envisages a new framework of an Action Plan between the continent and the rest of the world based on Africa setting its own agenda. It seeks to lay out, in broad terms, a strategy for Africa’s economic renaissance and sustainable development. It is a comprehensive integrated development plan that addresses key social, economic, environmental and political priorities. Read More
Africa Peer Review Mechnism Vol 2
Nigeria’s APRM National Programme of Action (NPoA) is the result of the recommendations in the Country Self-Assessment Report (CSAR) and the Country Review Report (CRR). The CSAR is a chronicle of the challenges, institutional weaknesses and best practices on governance and socio-economic development as well as key recommendations for improving governance in the country as perceived by the citizens of Nigeria during the Country Self-Assessment Process (CSAP) that was undertaken in the third and fourth quarters of 2006. The CRR, on the other hand, is the report of the one-month long Country Review Mission (CRM) fielded in Nigeria by the APRM Continental Secretariat to validate the CSAR and assess the state of governance and socio-economic development in the country.
The over-arching objective of the NPoA is to guide and mobilize Nigeria’s efforts in implementing relevant changes designed to improve governance and socio-economic development in the country by providing necessary supplementation to on-going development initiatives and introducing fresh initiatives as appropriate. Specifically, the NPoA seeks to proffer additional measures for addressing the identified governance challenges and institutional weaknesses as well as reinforcing best practices. The core principles that drive and underpin Nigeria’s NPoA include: restoration of time-honoured core values of honesty, decency, modesty, selflessness, transparency and accountability, humility, courage and forthrightness; national ownership; participatory governance through constructive partnerships; consistency with Constitutional imperatives; openness; technical competence; credibility; and insulation from manipulation by any stakeholder or interest group. Action Plan of the Environment Initiative
The African region offers significant potential for human, social and economic development but is facing enormous challenges. Rapid population growth, rising levels of poverty and inappropriate development practices are the main factors influencing the state of the environment in Africa. Other factors that have lead to continued environmental degradation include the impact of drought and other natural disasters, disease, ineffective development policies, unfavourable terms of international trade and the debt burden.
In adopting the United Nations Millennium Declaration in New York in September 2000, the heads of State representing the international community, specifically agreed to "take special measures to address the challenges of poverty eradication and sustainable development in Africa, including debt cancellation, improved market access, enhanced Official Development Assistance and increased flows of Foreign Direct Investment, as well as transfers of technology."

NEPAD Observation Mission (April 2011 Election)
The Conduct of credible elections is a core element for the attainment of good governance and sustainable growth and development. It is also widely believed that action in support of the right to participate in credible elections is critical to peace, security and conflict resolution in Africa.
Over the years, and at all levels of government, Nigerian elections have been marked by anti-democratic tendencies that undermined the electoral process and the credibility of its results. Hardly any election conducted in the country before 2011 had been free of charges of irregularities, electoral malpractices, violence and various degrees of disruptions. Critical facets of the electoral process were at times, fraught with uncertainties, irregularities, systematic flaws, and doubts about the effectiveness of important stakeholders in the process including the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) and security personnel on election duties.
